Spice up your oatmeal

You’ll feel more satisfied with your food if it’s got lots of flavor. You can trick your taste buds by giving them lots to think about. You won’t need to add sugar or sweeteners, and you can cut back on the salt. 

I’ve never been an oatmeal person, because oatmeal is bland and gross. Plus I had a traumatic experience in my youth where my grandma served me scalding hot oatmeal, and I thought my tongue was growing oats. I was very impressionable. 

Even though oatmeal is gross it does offer some health benefits, because it’s cholesterol free, low calorie, and packs a punch of gluten-free fiber in the morning. You’ll feel full longer, and you’ll be able to pass on that donut in the break room. Add some spices to your bowl of bland to help you forget that you’re eating healthy food. 

I mixed up some pumpkin pie spice this morning for my bowl of porridge: 2 tsp Saigon cinnamon, 1/2 tsp allspice, 1/2 tsp ground ginger, grated nutmeg (about 1/8 tsp). 

Try out a variety of toppings. You can’t go wrong with nuts, berries, and nut butters.  If you’re watching your calories, limit the oils because they add a lot to your intake: butter, nut butters, etc.
